Why the electric sprinkler is a different device, not a better one

The Manual Sprinkler is a reservoir. You fill it with the watering can and it distributes what you put in, which means it saves walking rather than saving water. The Electric Sprinkler is not a reservoir at all: it consumes 1 power each time it fires and produces the watering out of nothing, on a fixed 12-hour interval.

That single difference is what makes it worth the tech detour. It keeps running during Scorching Sun, when a crop's water drains faster, and it never needs a well, a barrel or a trip. The cost is that it is on the grid and it can fault in acid rain, so it belongs under a roof with the rest of your powered equipment.

One caution on the numbers below: the Chinese wiki's sell price is what a shop pays you for the device, not what you pay for it. There is no purchase price for these—you build them.

Coverage, and how to build around it

Coverage is measured as a rectangle centred on the device's own footprint, extending outward on each side. The Manual Sprinkler reaches 3 tiles horizontally and 1 vertically from a 1 by 2 body; the Electric Sprinkler reaches 4 and 2 from a 2 by 2 body; the Farm Light reaches 6 and 3 from a 2 by 4 body.

Vertical reach is the part players miss. Because coverage extends upward as well as sideways, you can put basins on a platform above a sprinkler and still have them watered by it. A player guide working from the released build reports fitting up to 14 small planter boxes around one electric sprinkler, and larger boxes stay covered as well.

That guide independently gives the manual sprinkler as 7 by 3 and the electric as 10 by 5. The 10 by 5 figure matches the wiki exactly. The 7 by 3 does not: the wiki records the manual sprinkler as 7 by 5. Both agree on the horizontal reach, so plan your rows on 7 wide and treat the manual sprinkler's vertical reach as the number to verify in your own save.

The grow light is a speed multiplier, not a light source

The Farm Light is unlocked at Supplemental Lighting, which sits behind Agricultural Industrialization and costs 8 Field Study and 2 Tech Research—meaning you cannot have it before the electric sprinkler. It fires every 50 minutes for 1 power and raises the growth speed of crops in range by 25%.

Its 14 by 8 area is by far the largest of the three, so one unit generally covers a whole indoor plot. Stacking it with the Unbridled Growth gene, which adds 30% growth speed, is the cheapest way to compress a long-season crop, at the cost of a gene slot and a Biomass Directory unlock.

Keep all three powered devices indoors or roofed. Both the electric sprinkler and the light carry an acid-rain fault flag; the manual sprinkler does not, which is the one advantage it keeps.
