How the counter behaves

There is one counter per item, not per source. Amber can drop from coalCoalA basic fuel used by furnaces and several production loops. nodes and nowhere else, so its counter is simple; but for items with several sources — the Chameleon Bug Hat drops from ordinary, radiation and acid chameleon bugs alike — every one of those kills advances the same single counter. Splitting your farming across sources costs you nothing.

The counter is save data. Quitting to the menu, reloading, or coming back a week later does not reset it, which means a partially built counter is worth remembering rather than starting over on a different node type.

The roll order matters for understanding why pity never overshoots. The game rolls the normal drop chance first. If that roll succeeds, you get the item and the counter zeroes on the spot. Only if it fails does the counter increment. So reaching the threshold always yields exactly one item, and the accumulation restarts from the next miss.

Only what the wiki calls valid pity sources count. Breaking a node type that does not have the item in its loot table does not move the counter, however many of them you clear.

Cyclic versus once-only

Two kinds of entry sit in the same table. Cyclic items — the four gemstones, the three fossils, the deep soil sample — keep re-arming after each guaranteed drop, so the threshold is a repeating farm rate rather than a one-time cost.

Once-only items fire a single time per save. The Skull Hat, Mask 66, the Chameleon Bug Hat, the Dianthus Top Hat and the Chilli Seed Mother Plant all sit in this group. Once you have received one, that counter stops mattering, which is exactly what you want for cosmetic and utility hats.

The two 200-threshold hats are the longest grinds in the table by a wide margin. The Skull Hat significantly increases critical hit rate and the Mask 66 disguises you so the Type-33 series stops attacking on sight — both are useful enough to justify the count, but budget for it rather than expecting a lucky drop.

The Deep Soil Sample is the odd one out: a threshold of just 3, unlocked through Okuma's three-heart event and the five-sample quest, with a hard cap of five obtainable in total. It is a quest resource wearing a pity counter rather than a farmable drop.

What is not covered by pity

Several fishing-obtained items — the Three Damp Cloth Strips, the Fish TankFish TankA farm facility used for fish breeding and breeding-only species. Hat and some music data — have no pity counter at all. What they have instead is a global cap of one per save, so they can appear at any time but never twice.

The notes found in trash cans use their own independent story counters rather than the shared pity system, so do not expect the table below to predict them.

All pity thresholds

Threshold counts the number of valid sources broken or killed without the item dropping. Cyclic entries re-arm after each guaranteed drop.
